HOME SCIENCE EDUCATION COLLABORATION SEARCH CIRES

At CIRES, we study Earth in the field, and we study earth in the lab. We study Earth using models, and we study earth from space. We are proud to count among our accomplishments & awards, winners of the prestigious National Medal of Science, the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, as well as numerous celebrated fellowships, lifetime achievement, and distinguished professor awards.

PermafrostPermafrost Threatened By Rapid Arctic Sea Ice Retreat
The rate of climate warming over northern Alaska, Canada, and Russia could more than triple during extended episodes of rapid sea ice loss, according to a new study from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and CIRES' National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). New model simulations suggest that during future periods of rapid sea ice loss, Arctic land will warm 3.5 times faster than the average rates of warming predicted by previous global climate model efforts.
