General Info
I got my High School diploma in Rome (Italy), and my degree of Doctor in Physics at the University of Rome ``La Sapienza'' (http://www.uniroma1.it/) in October 1985, with a specialization in Geophysics. I did my thesis work at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the National Research Council (http://www.urp.cnr.it/) in Rome on the perturbation induced by orography (the Alps) and heat source (the Mediterranean) over the mesoscale flow, under the supervision of Prof Giovanni A. Dalu.

At the beginning, in 1985 I worked in the Dynamics Group of IFA - CNR, and then, in 1986-1987, in the Air Radioactivity Group, at the same Institute. During this period I analyzed Air Radioactivity samples collected in the stations of the Italian National Network, and I started some modeling of the transport and diffusion in the atmosphere of radioactive pollutants deriving from the Cernobyl accident in collaboration with the National Electric Board (ENEL) in Milan (Italy) using a trajectory model.

In 1987 I worked for a short time at the Imperial College of London (UK), in the Atmospheric Physics Group to Initialize and apply their the Mesoscale Ocean Circulation Numerical Model to the case of the Western Mediterranean Sea.

Since 1988, I have a permanent position as research associate (Ricercatore) at the Institute for Atmospheric Physics (IFA-CNR), Rome (Italy), and during 1989 - 1993 I was responsible of the Group for Mesoscale Circulation and Air Pollution Models at the Research Area of Frascati, (Italy).

In 1991 during my visit at the Dpt of Atmospheric Science of the Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a NATO-CNR Post-Doc fellowship, I modeled analytically the atmospheric perturbations induced by changes in the characteristics of the surface and studied their subgrid parameterization. During the same period, I started to be familiar (?!?!) with the CSU Regional Atmospheric Modeling System - RAMS (http://www.aster.com/), which I applied later on to study the atmospheric dynamics of some Italian Regions, and some phenomena like sea breeze, katabatic winds....

In 1993-1995 I visited the International Institute for Applied System Analysis in Austria, (IIASA, http://www.iiasa.ac.at/) as a Research Scholar, where I worked in the Transboundary Air Pollution Project for the development of an Integrated Assessment Model for tropospheric ozone over Europe in collaboration with University of Oslo and EMEP center in Norway.

In 1995-1996 I was Research Associate at the Geography Dept of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (http://www.geog.ubc.ca/) working with Prof Douw Steyn on meteorological and photochemical modeling of severe ozone episodes in the Lower Fraser Valley, B.C. Development of an Observation Based Model (OBM) which will allow the user to draw conclusions on the relationship between O3 concentration and its precursors in the region considered, and scientific guidelines for the preposed local Authorities.

I continued in the last few years the collaboration with the Colorado State University, Dpt of Atmospheric Science, and the University of British Columbia, Dpt of Geography and then The Science One Program (http://www.science.ubc.ca/~science1/) thanks to the CNR Short-Term Mobility Program and to a NATO-CNR Senior fellowship.

In 1999-2000 I started a collaboration with Prof I. Uno, at the Research Institute of Applied Mechanics (RIAM) of the Kyushu University in Fukuoka (JP) (http://www.riam.kyushu-u.ac.jp/) financed by the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST) to study the transport and deposition of Air Pollutants in the East Asia Region, using a parallel version of the RAMS with an on-line tracer transport module developed in Japan. The last parallel version of RAMS has been used and some nice results are published on the web site of the RAMS Users Workshop

On going research in collaboration with those Universities are relative to the subgrid parameterization of terrain-induced flows and fluxes, to the modeling of boundary layer depth and sea breeze in complex terrain and coastline modeling of the transport and deposition of pollutants in East Asia.

My teaching experience in the field of Atmospheric Dynamics consists of several seminars in the framework of Institutional University Courses on Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Mesoscale Dynamics, Air Pollution.
I also participated and taught a Workshop at UBC on Ensemble Forecast organized by Prof R. Stull, and since 1998 I'm teaching at the University of Tuscia in Viterbo (http://www.unitus.it/) the course of Climatology and Meteorology in the Dept of Environmental Science.

Current and Past Research Interests are:

  • Atmospheric Physics with particular attention to Mesoscale Atmospheric Dynamics
  • Transport and Diffusion of Pollutants in the Troposphere (with very little chemistry!)
  • Atmospheric Boundary Layer Processes
  • Mathematical (analytical) Modeling for the Environment

I'm presently member of several related Associations:
