Spectroscopic Studies of Titan Particles

The atmosphere of Saturn’s moon, Titan, contains methane, nitrogen, and other trace species, upon which ultraviolet photolysis and electron impact dissociation form a hydrocarbon haze. Titan’s haze has a dominant effect on the radiative balance of its atmosphere. The aerosol particles that make up the haze absorb most of the incident sunlight, but weakly absorb in the infrared, cooling the surface and affecting the atmospheric temperature profile. In our studies, we aim to characterize the optical properties of Titan’s haze aerosol for a range of wavelengths to understand the surface and atmosphere of Titan. We will prepare laboratory analogs of Titan’s aerosol particles and measure their extinction with cavity ring-down aerosol extinction spectroscopy.
