NOAA Science Partners

CIRES' cooperative research efforts with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) are centered in the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory and other NOAA facilities located in Boulder.

The NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory was formed October 1, 2005 as part of a reorganization and consolidation of six NOAA research entities. Those working within ESRL, including many CIRES employees, are dedicated to fulfilling ESRL's mission "to observe and understand the Earth system and to develop products through a commitment to research that will advance NOAA's environmental information and service on global-to-local scales."

Partners at Other NOAA Facilities in Boulder
CIRES employees also work within other NOAA facilities located in Boulder, Colorado, including the National Climatic Data Center's Paleoclimatology Branch, the National Geophysical Data Center, and the Space Weather Prediction Center.

National Climatic Data Center Paleoclimatology Branch
The NOAA Paleoclimatology Program provides the paleoclimate data and information needed to understand and model inter-annual to centennial-scale environmental variability. It provides the world's largest archive of climate and paleoclimate data; operates the World Data Center for Paleoclimatology, an Applied Research Center for Paleoclimatology; and partners with national and international science initiatives around the world to expand the use of paleoclimatic data.

NOAA National Geophysical Data Center
NGDC provides long-term scientific stewardship for the nation's geophysical data. The Center also provides products and services for geophysical data describing the solid earth, marine, and solar-terrestrial environments, as well as earth observations from space. NGDC works closely with contributors of scientific data to prepare documented, reliable data sets, and the Center welcomes cooperative projects with other government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and universities.

Space Weather Prediction Center
The Space Weather Prediction Center continually monitors and forecasts Earth's space environment; provides accurate, reliable, and useful solar-terrestrial information; conducts and leads research and development programs to understand the environment and to improve services; advises policy makers and planners; plays a leadership role in the space weather community; and fosters a space weather services industry. The Center is the nation's official source of space weather alerts and warnings.

The Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) merged programs of the Aeronomy Laboratory and the Environmental Technology Laboratory. The Division conducts scientific research aimed at discovering, understanding, and quantifying the processes that govern the chemical reactions of Earth's atmosphere that are needed to improve the capability to predict its behavior. Over 50% of the staff are CIRES employees. For more information, contact CIRES Associate Director Fred C. Fehsenfeld.

The Physical Sciences Division (PSD) derives from work groups previously located within the Aeronomy Laboratory, the Climate Diagnostics Center, and the Environmental Technology Laboratory. This merger brings together expertise in weather and climate dynamics, diagnostic and modeling analyses; physical observations, monitoring and related technology development; and physical process understanding and research. For more information, contact CIRES Associate Director Randall M. Dole.

The Global Monitoring Division (GMD) unites two groups in the former NOAA Boulder Labs that conduct long-term, continuous measurements of climate and air quality-related parameters: global atmospheric gases, aerosol particles and radiation by the Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory, and continuous measurements of atmospheric radiation in the United States by the Surface Radiation Research Branch of the Air Resources Laboratory. For more information, contact CIRES Associate Director R. Michael Hardesty.

The former Forecast Systems Laboratory became the Global Systems Division (GSD) of the Earth System Research Laboratory. The Division’s mission is to conduct research and development to provide NOAA and the nation with systems that deliver global environmental information and forecast products ranging from short-term weather predictions to longer-term climate forecasts. For more information, contact CIRES Associate Director Randall M. Dole.
