Science Products and Services

Scientific publications provide the best measure of CIRES on-going productivity as a premier research institute at the University of Colorado at Boulder and within the NOAA's laboratories in Boulder. CIRES scientists and faculty published over 500 scholarly papers during FY 2003. Other valuable outcomes of scientific work within the Institute include data products, maps and atlases, models and model output, science policy and education products, as well as scientific assessments and online products. In addition, a valuable collection of images from expeditions and field campaigns is available here. The CIRES instrumentation facility has designed and produced instruments for science users at universities, government laboratories, and corporations around the world.

Publications
In addition to the many scientific publications of our researchers, CIRES scientists, centers, and staff also publish blogs, books, newsletters, serial scientific publications, online content, and reports and planning documents.

Data
CIRES' centers distribute hundreds of data products related to climate and representing the cryosphere. Individual CIRES researchers also regularly provide data products that result from their work in fields ranging from the atmospheric sciences to the geological and hydrological sciences.

Images
Science provides valuable views of its subjects, often literally. For CIRES scientists, Earth is their subject. They study and produce a world of images, from satellite perspectives of the planet to photographs taken while doing field work in faraway places like Antarctica.

Maps and Atlases
Arctic atlases, earthquake maps, and graphical products of weather and climate are among the maps and atlases provided via CIRES and its related centers.

Scientific Assessments
Scientific assessments often result when CIRES researchers — who work across a range of fields, including science policy — collaborate with experts and partner with end users from outside the Institute.

Online Products
This small sampling of Web-based products produced by CIRES scientists includes the Climate Services Clearinghouse, the Extreme Weather Sourcebook, the Climate Timeline Information Tool, and the Earthquake Map Server.

Scientific Instruments
The CIRES Integrated Instrument Development Facility is multi-faceted, consisting of design, precision machine, electronics and scientific glassblowing shops dedicated to the design and fabrication of scientific instrumentation. IIDF specializes in complete instrument development, from theory to testing.

Other Products
Past and present CIRES employees hold many patents. CIRES Fellow Robert E. Sievers alone has claimed more than 30 patents, many of which have been licensed. Staff of CIRES' Center for Science and Technology Policy Research About the Center ] produce peer-reviewed publications, books, magazine and newspaper articles, a newsletter, an extensive web site of their own, weblog, and Web-based products like the Climate Services Clearinghouse. As education is central to the CIRES' mission, our scientists, education and outreach professionals, and others often produce information products for educators, students, and the general public. Many of these education products are Web-based. For a sample of these, see this list of education resources in environmental sciences.
