Drew's High Latitude Travels
- 1997 : Hitched my way through northern Canada with my old
friend Mark van Grootel. We dropped down to Skagway, Alaska and walked
over the Chilkoot Trail, then got to Whitehorce, YT and paddled the 750km
down the Yukon River to Dawson City. It was the 100th anniversary of the
Klondike Gold Rush. 1997 is shown with the blue line in the map below.
- 1998 : A transition year, when I moved from Oz to the US
- A quick run through Iceland for a bit over 3 weeks. We hitched
around the south of Iceland and managed to go on enough backcountry walks to
avoid civilisation and the very high cost of hanging out in urban Iceland - I
have never paid that much for 1 beer !
- Ivotuk Hills : Six weeks of intensive field work up on the tundra. For
further pictures, see here.
The pink line shows travels in 1998
- 1999 : Based in Fairbanks, Alaska for the summer, I was able to
visit a wide variety of places in Alaska for both science and fun. The drive
along the Dalton Hwy to Prudhoe Bay was most interesting, as were portions of
Frostfire experiment and the weeks of work in
Council, out near Nome on the
Seward Peninsula.
- 2001 : I returned to Council in April to do some snow based field
work with Matthew Sturm (CRREL), Glen Liston (CSU) and Karl Volz (UAA). We
had disgustingly nice weather. The snow-mobile ride from Nome to Council
was especially picturesque.
- 2002 : Matthew Sturm invited me up to
Barrow
in late April/early May. The work in this case was mostly based on the sea
ice.
