Thesis Summary :

(Macquarie University)
Thesis title : "An Investigation of Snow and Frozen Soil in a Land
Surface Scheme"
Thesis summary : An investigation of the thermodynamics
and hydrodynamics of the parameterization of the snow/soil system within
a sophisticated Land Surface Scheme (LSS). Validation of the scheme BASE
was undertaken along with a suite of sensitivity experiments. Improvements
to various aspects of the scheme were made in addition to a series of important
discoveries. These discoveries include the need for careful experimental
design when using LSSs in cold/mid-latitude regions, high sensitivity of
such a LSS to downward longwave radiation and altered simulation of sub-surface
hydrology due to poor replication of the frozen soil regime.
Results from this thesis have been incorporated
into BASE which is now being used in the BMRC GCM.

Employment and Occupations
:
-
1996-1998 Research Officer -
School of Earth Sciences, Macquarie University
-
Research was concentrated on modeling of snow and frozen soil processes
at the land surface. Major undertaking was (and still is) my involvement
in PILPS. Dr. C.A. Schlosser
and myself have been coordinating PILPS Phase
2(d) - Valdai which is concerned with the off-line forcing of about
20 land surface schemes from international research groups for the purposes
of investigating parameterizations of snow and frozen soil processes.
-
The presentation of lectures to the unit
GEOS 301 GLOBAL CLIMATES was also
involved. My lectures concentrated on the interaction of the cryosphere
with the climate system.
-
1995 Research and Computing Assistant - School of Earth Sciences, Macquarie
University
-
This position concerned the collection and colation of material for
GEOS 114, first year unit at Macquarie University. This material was then
transformed into a WWW-based tutorial package which students could access.
-
1993-1996 Macquarie University Library - Photocopy and general staff
-
Duties included supervision of all photocopy facilities, customer services,
basic machine maintenance, colour copy production, shelving.
-
Freelance Photographer - specialising in rockclimbing/mountaineering
and outdoor photography
-
Freelance Rockclimibng Instructor/Guide - working for school groups etc.
-
The above two activities are the result of my main recreational persuits
and operate more at the amateur level rather than the professional level.
