Avanisvami is one of two temples in an advanced state of collapse near Avantipur. Many of the stone blocks have been shifted and the site cleared. The ruins have suggested to at least one historian their destruction by gunpowder. Others attribute its destruction to Sikunder the Iconoclast. Earthquakes may have initiated the collapse of the main temple structures.
