William Colgan, Ph.D.

I am a Research Associate at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) working within the Earth Science and Observation Center (ESOC). I recently completed a Ph.D. in Physical Geography (2011) at the University of Colorado. I have previously completed an M.Sc. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (2007) at the University of Alberta and a B.Sc.H. in Biology and Geography (2004) at Queen's University.

I am part of a team that is focused on forecasting the response of the cryosphere to ongoing and future climate change. My primary interest is in understanding the potential implications of increased surface meltwater production on the ice flow of the Greenland Ice Sheet. I study this topic using a combination of numerical modeling, remote sensing and field observations. During the past decade I have participated in over 40 weeks of field expeditions to the Canadian Arctic, Greenland and Antarctica.
