GK-12 Fellows and Fellowships

Partners in Science Education

The foci of the GK-12 Fellows Program at CU-Boulder, which began in June 2003, are: Place 9 graduate fellows from the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) disciplines into middle and high school science classes. Targeted schools have a significant Hispanic population, and many of the students are in ESL programs. Provide content expertise and assistance in the classroom with newly developed Full Option Science System modules (FOSS kits) for secondary science. Kits include: Earth History, Diversity of Life, Weather and Water, Planetary Science. Develop mini-modules for Chemistry and AP Environmental Science classes. Extend the activities in the FOSS kits to a Sombrero Marsh field experience. Lead field trips to the marsh. Mentor high school students and teachers on field-based research projects at Sombrero Marsh and Open Space land.

To date, 225 4th and 5th graders have participated in the Sombrero Marsh Education Program. GK-12 Fellows have interacted with ca. 500 students on a regular basis.

Students gain insight into how scientists do science. Fellows gain experience in teaching at the secondary science level. Students learn environmental stewardship.
