Research Interests
My research focuses on observing, understanding, and modeling Earth’s magnetic field, from the core and crust to the ionosphere and magnetosphere, using satellite and ground-based measurements. I am interested both in the physical processes that generate magnetic-field variations and in developing accurate geomagnetic models for scientific and operational applications. Since joining CIRES in 2014, I have led the development of the U.S./UK World Magnetic Model at CIRES/NCEI.
Current Research
My current research uses satellite and ground-based magnetic observations to improve models of Earth’s magnetic field and its variability. Current topics include rapid changes of the core field, high-resolution crustal magnetic-field modeling, separation and modeling of ionospheric and magnetospheric magnetic fields, and quantification of geomagnetic model uncertainties. I am also interested in translating advances in geomagnetic science into improved reference fields and corrections for navigation, directional drilling, magnetic surveying, and other applications that depend on accurate knowledge of the magnetic field.
