Ashley Azadeh

Research Interests

Ashley is a fourth-year MCDB PhD student in Shelley Copley's lab at CU Boulder, where her passions for evolution, biochemistry, and microbes perfectly intersect. Ashley spends most of her time outside of lab on sports, food, hiking, and video games.

Current Research

Microbes have been evolving enzymes to accelerate the rates of chemical reactions for billions of years and counting. We can't know which (or how) long-gone organisms first evolved new enzymes, but we can evolve bacteria in the lab to track evolution of a new enzyme in real-time. I am tracking how different bacterial species evolve the same new enzyme to understand how the potential for evolution of a new enzyme varies/varied across different species.

About CECA

CECA connects and creates a supportive environment for graduate students and postdocs who come from various academic units to do research in CIRES.
