Research Interests
Jeremiah Osborne-Gowey is an interdisciplinary environmental social scientist working at the nexus of science, policy, and natural resource management. His research examines how social and environmental stressors shape human behavior, decision-making, and adaptation -- with particular attention to water insecurity, livelihoods, climate communication, and media representations of environmental change. Dr. Osborne-Gowey draws on mixed methods across the fields of ecology, sociology, communication, economics, public health, and public policy to investigate complex human-environment interactions at multiple scales.
Current Research
Jeremiah's current research spans three interconnected areas: global household water insecurity, behavioral and livelihood change in response to social and environmental pressures, and climate change media monitoring through the Media and Climate Change Observatory (MeCCO; link) at the University of Colorado Boulder. This work draws on survey-based and mixed methods approaches across multiple countries, with projects in the United States, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Jeremiah previously worked for more than 15 years as an aquatic and landscape ecologist with federal and state agencies, universities, and private and nonprofit consulting firms throughout the western United States.
A lifelong naturalist and outdoorsperson, Jeremiah finds that time in the field -- whether fly fishing, forest foraging, backpacking, or simply paying attention to the living world -- keeps him grounded in the questions that drew him to tackling tough social-environmental issues in the first place. He also enjoys photography, homebrewing, gardening, geocaching, and blacksmithing.
