Chemistry
Chemistry is fundamental to understanding each component of the environmental system. CIRES researchers develop and employ innovative observational and monitoring systems to inform understanding of the evolving chemical environment. Using these data, scientists are able to model chemical interactions that are important to understanding contemporary chemical systems and to projecting future implications for the environment. Chemistry research at the Institute explores the atmosphere, the soil, and aquatic environments, in both laboratory and field-based settings. CIRES scientists are leaders in environmental chemistry, bringing understanding of sub-atomic to global processes to bear on critical societal challenges.
