CIRES Student Assistant Position at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)
CIRES has an immediate opening for a student with an interest in acquiring experience in environmental data and information management. This position requires basic computer skills, intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and willingness to learn. Coursework in information science, data science, oceanography, or computer science is desirable, but not necessary. This position is located at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NCEI on the NOAA campus, 325 Broadway and working hours are between 7am and 7pm Monday - Friday.
Principal Duties:
- Assist with collecting metadata
- Assist with monitoring and troubleshooting data ingest scripts
- Assist with fulfilling customer data requests
- Assist with cataloging data holdings
- Assist with quality control and database updates
- Assist with creating and updating standard operating procedures
Requirements:
- Enrolled at CU in an undergraduate program (2026 Fall standing as a sophomore or junior)
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong organizational skills to work on multiple projects
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Willingness to ask questions for clarification and to seek feedback
- Willingness to work and collaborate with staff from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, and interest in encouraging diversity and inclusion
- Ability to use the Unix/Linux operating systems
Desired, but not required:
- 1-2 semesters course work in data, information, earth or environmental sciences
- Experience with databases and/or SQL
- Experience with programming and/or scripting languages such as Python or Bash
- Familiarity with visualizing spatial data and plotting geographic coordinates (e.g., GIS, MATLAB, R, etc.)
- Skills using Google workspace apps such as Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Meets
Salary: $18-$25 per hour depending on skills and experience
This data assistant position will be filled as a Student Research Assistant in CIRES at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Successful candidates can work up to 25 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters and up to 40 hours/week during the summer.
