How do solar flares change Earth’s magnetic field? Why is the Aurora most active during high solar activity? The Earth’s magnetic field extends from the Earth’s interior out into space, interacting with space weather and protecting our planet from the Sun’s solar winds. It is why we can navigate the planet using compasses and GPS, how animals embark on migrations on our planet, and protect us from harmful radiation and cosmic rays. 

Your smartphone can measure the magnetic field around you. Created by a team of NOAA scientists, the MagVar app helps anyone understand how the magnetic field changes, conduct local experiments and support ongoing global research! In this panel, we’ll hear from two undergraduate students, Jae Robinson and Holly McCrory, and geophysicist Aamna Sirohey, who are using this app to understand more about the world around them and the importance of citizen contributions furthering our understanding of this great force that protects this planet
