Using the Hazards Education Awareness and Resilient Task (HEART) Force Curriculum in Your Science Classroom

Using the Hazards Education Awareness and Resilient Task (HEART) Force Curriculum in Your Science Classroom

Join us for a workshop hosted by the Peak Area Leadership in Science (PALS) for a Hub Meeting, featuring HEART Force! PALS provides free professional development for Pikes Peak area secondary science teachers, and welcomes teachers from outside the area on a "space available" basis.

Natural hazards are a part of our lives. Explore the Hazards Education Awareness and Resilience Task (HEART) Force curriculum to teach your students about floods, wildfires and droughts. Learn how your students can use place-based resources to understand the risks these hazards pose to their community, and how their community can be more resilient to these hazards. The goal of the HEART Force program is to engage students and teachers to take proactive steps in preparing for potential hazards that are becoming more frequent due to climate change. During the workshop, participants will get an overview of the free curriculum, explore hazards in their own community using curriculum resources, and hear from a mental health expert, Dr. Courtney Welton-Mitchell, who studies disaster psychology about how to support social emotional learning while teaching about hazards. HEART Force is funded by NOAA, and is a program run by the CIRES Education & Outreach group at CU Boulder.
