Research Interests

My group works at the interface of the fields of ecology and microbiology. We study those microscopic organisms, namely bacteria and fungi, that are abundant and ubiquitous in nearly every environment on Earth where they are critical to the functioning of ecosystems. Previous work has focused on those microorganisms living inside our homes, in soil, on the human body, and in the atmosphere. We explore the diversity of microbial communities, identify the fundamental controls on microbial processes, and examine the mechanisms by which microorganisms influence human health and the health of ecosystems.

Current Research

Recently my group has been conducting a number of studies investigating those microbes living with us in our homes. As just one example of ongoing research, we are studying those bacteria that cause non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease—a growing problem in the U.S. Currently, it is estimated that >100,000 individuals suffer from NTM disease and the true prevalence of this disease is probably higher as most cases are likely never diagnosed. NTM disease is caused by a group of bacteria (the mycobacteria) that is commonly found living inside household water pipes or showerheads. In fact, many people with NTM disease have likely acquired the disease by inhaling mycobacteria from aerosolized water droplets while showering. For this reason, we are quantifying how the amounts and types of mycobacteria linked to NTM disease vary in showerheads from hundreds of households across the United States. To do so, we are working with a network of volunteer citizen scientists to collect swab samples of the bacteria found inside their showerheads. After quantifying the amounts and types of mycobacteria found in each showerhead, we use data on household location and other factors (including water chemistry) to predict why exposures to those bacteria that cause NTM disease are likely to be higher in some U.S. households than in others. While this study is still ongoing, our goal is to comprehensively investigate the amounts and types of mycobacterial exposures in homes, information that will be critical for understanding variation in the risk of acquiring NTM disease and what specific strategies could be used to reduce the transmission of NTM disease.
