Career panel with ANYL alumni:

We have asked the speakers to present for 12-15 min on their perspective on careers outside academia for PhD chemists, and in particular for graduates of our ANYL PhD program. For example, they may address the following questions: what path took you to where you are? What strengths from the ANYL program helped you in your career? What could have the program done to make that better? What do you wish someone had told you when you were a PhD student? What advice would you give to current PhD students and postdocs? A Q&A session will follow, prioritizing questions from current students and postdocs.

Brett Palm,
NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research

Brett Palm is a scientist at the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR), where he works in the Atmospheric Chemistry Observations and Modeling lab (ACOM). His research focuses on studying the roles of organic compounds in atmospheric oxidation processes, including the evolution of organic emissions and the subsequent secondary organic aerosol formation. To study these topics, his research tools include developing and deploying cutting edge mass spectrometric techniques to make airborne ambient measurements as well as using explicit modeling to interpret and expand upon those measurements. Prior to NSF NCAR, Brett earned his PhD in 2017 at the University of Colorado-Boulder with Prof. Jose Jimenez. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral scholar working with Prof. Joel Thornton at the University of Washington.

Lucas Algrim,
California Air Resources Board

Lucas Algrim received a B.S. and M.S in Chemistry (Fresno State) prior to his time at CU Boulder.  Here he worked for Paul Ziemann on projects that studied Secondary Organic Aerosol formation from oxygenated precursors and VOC partitioning to indoor painted surfaces.  After his PhD he was a postdoc at UC Riverside for Michael Zachariah in Chemical Engineering before he moved to the California Air Resources Board, CARB.  Lucas spent two years at CARB working in the Mobile Source Laboratory Division where he performed laboratory analyses on gasoline and diesel fuels.  Following this he moved to the Air Quality Planning and Science Division where he works on a number of projects related to CARB's EMFAC model which estimates on-road emissions in the state of California.  In his spare time he enjoys being outdoors and hopes his career efforts will help ensure future generations can enjoy their time outdoors as well.
