CIRES Tribal Advisor, James Rattling Leaf, Sr. is offering this seminar during his visit to Boulder. The hybrid session will provide recommendations for working with Tribal communities based on the knowledge that long-term relationship building with these communities is the foundation upon which educational programs, research collaborations, and other initiatives must be co-created. Sharing the Cultural Intelligence framework will define effective practices in building relationships and clarify a process for establishing and maintaining effective collaborations with Tribal communities that respect sovereignty and self-determination. CU Boulder and NOAA employees can join in person in the CIRES Auditorium, or online via the YouTube link. Talk will end at 4pm; reception to follow in the CIRES Atrium!

James Rattling Leaf, Sr. is a research associate at CIRES, as well a co-principal investigator at the North Central Climate Adaptation Science Center. He specializes in developing programs that use the interface between Indigenous people’s traditional knowledge and Western science. He has over 25 years’ experience working with the federal government, higher education institutions and nonprofits to develop and maintain effective working relationships with federally and non-federally recognized American Indian tribes, tribal colleges and universities, and tribal communities. He sees a greater vision of human knowledge that incorporates the many insights of human cultures and provides a context for our better understanding of the planet and the world. He has projects with the Environmental Science Data Innovation and Inclusion Lab, North Central Climate Adaptation Science Center, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, GEO Indigenous Alliance, and the Ecological Society of America Traditional Ecological Knowledge Section. He is a citizen of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
