Humans of CIRES: Vidhyarth T S
PhD Student in Aerospace Engineering Sciences grew up in Chennai, India
Spotlight

Vidhyarth T S is a PhD student in the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences working with CIRES Fellow Khosro Ghobadi-Far. He studies variations in Earth’s gravity field using satellites — his work helps scientists better understand terrestrial water storage, ice mass loss, and more. In 2025, Vidhyarth was selected as a Future Investigator through NASA’s Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) program. He grew up in Chennai, India, where the “sea has always been part of [his] home” — and he loves cats
Humans of CIRES Q&A
What do you study at CIRES?
I analyze variations in Earth’s gravity field using satellite missions such as GRACE, GRACE-FO, and GOCE. Studying these gravity changes, helps us in quantifying mass redistribution on Earth, including terrestrial water storage variations, ice mass loss, and other climate-related processes.
What has been your greatest professional achievement so far?
My greatest achievement has been being selected as a Future Investigator through NASA’s Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) program. Through this award, I received $150,000 to support my research on analyzing ultra-precise GRACE Follow-On laser ranging interferometer measurements to model Earth's static gravity field. This opportunity also allowed me to connect with other early-career researchers at AGU 2025, where I gained broader insight into the diverse environmental research being conducted within the Earth and space science community.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Chennai, a vibrant coastal city in southern India where the Bay of Bengal practically feels like an extension of home. With sandy beaches, ocean sunsets, and the constant sound of waves in the background, the sea has always been part of my everyday life.
Dogs or cats?
I like dogs, but I absolutely love cats. I’m always in awe of their nonchalant attitude and effortless confidence.
