Kyle Mcmillan

Research Interests

Kyle is a PhD candidate in atmospheric chemistry working in the laboratory with Prof. Maggie Tolbert. He earned his BS degree in Chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. When he isn’t working in the lab, Kyle enjoys hiking and climbing in Colorado’s high country and afternoons out on the tennis court.

Current Research

Kyle’s research is focused on probing phase changes that occur within freely floating aerosol particles and clouds using two novel particle levitation techniques: a long working distance optical trap and a dual balance elctrodynamic trap. Kyle is examining how contact between two particles can result in a phase change. His current specific focus is probing how collision with a solid particle induces conversion of liquid water to ice, with the hope of gaining a more fundamental understanding of the mechanisms behind contact freezing and how it might affect the phase distribution of supercooled liquid water and ice in mixed-phase clouds.
