Research Interests
Sylvia Reeves is the National Integrated Drought Information System's Northeast Drought Information Coordinator. She came to this position with NOAA in June of 2020 just as the northeast plunged into its third significant drought episode since the year 2000. Sylvia's undergraduate degree is in Atmospheric Sciences from Cornell University and her Master’s degree is in Science Policy from North Carolina State University. For the Northeast Drought Early Warning System (DEWS) position, Sylvia returned to Cornell and is imbedded with the Northeast Regional Climate Center (NRCC) team. While the Program Office for NIDIS is located in Boulder, Colorado, her remotely located position facilitates work with DEWS partners in the New England states and the state of New York. Her regional work for NIDIS focuses on strengthening an integrated system for drought monitoring, forecasting, and planning and preparedness jointly with federal agency partners, tribes, states, municipalities, academic institutions, and other organizations. Sylvia lives in the Ithaca NY area, enjoys cooking, snowshoeing, sledding, movies, science, history and short hikes of the region's gorges to photograph the waterfalls.
