I am a Postdoc researcher working on developing new process oriented diagnostic tools that can help guide model development in improving the representation of tropical convective variability in NOAA UFS (Unified Forescast System). We are currently focusing on aspects related to representation of moisture-convection coupling, and air-sea coupling in models and how that impacts convection. Motivation for this work comes from the observed rapid degradation in forecast skill in the tropics. This is hypothesized to be related to poor representation of moist thermodynamics in models which impacts the ability to represent large scale evolution of convection and rainfall correctly in the tropics.
