Research Interests

Don Schmit graduated with a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and Planetary Science from the University of Colorado in 2012. He has previously worked at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophyics Laboratory, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. His background is in solar imaging and spectroscopy, working in the optical, ultraviolet, and extreme ultraviolet domains.

Dr. Schmit is currently the team lead for the Solar Imaging Group in the Space Weather Section (OGSSD/STP) of the National Centers for Environmental Information (NOAA/NCEI). One of the primary responsibilites for the Solar Imaging Group is calibrating the data for the SUVI instruments on the GOES-R series satellites and for the upcoming CCOR (Compact Coronagraph) instruments for the SWFO program.

Current Research

NOAA-directed projects

  • Preparing for calibration and validation activities for CCOR-1 on GOES-U
  • Preparing for calibration and validation activiteis for CCOR-2 on SWFO
  • Maintaining calibration of the SUVI instruments on GOES-16, GOES-17, GOES-18

Other funded projects

  • Project scientist for the National Solar Observatory DKIST Level 2 Data project
  • Co-I on the Solar Eruptions Integral Field Spectrograph NASA LCAS instrument
  • Co-I on 2021 NASA Living with a Star grant "Linking Surface Magnetic Fields to the Structure and Dynamics of the Solar Corona"
