Research Interests
- Convective-scale numerical weather prediction, both deterministic and probabilistic (ensemble approach)
- Forecast verification, including alternative methods such as neighborhood and object-based
- Outside of work:
- I own and operate the Stormtrack online community, a forum for severe weather and storm chasing enthusiasts and veterans alike.
- I participate in various mentoring activities for upcoming scientists. In 2022-2023 I advised an undergraduate student for the Lapenta Internship program. In 2023-2024 I shared letters about my academic background and the nature of a career in research meteorology with a pen pal as part of the Letters to a Pre-Scientist Program. In 2025 I mentored an undegraduate student at Iowa State University in a required research project (something I myself did as a graduate of the meteorology program at ISU).
- My wife and I welcomed our first child, a son, born in February 2025
Current Research
(Updated November 2025)
Determining model climatologies of extreme precipitation for the Probable Maximum Precipitation research program.
Working on development of Fire Weather products in MPAS.
Continuing development of novel verification workflows, such as Fractions Skill Score for real-time models.
