CIRES Hourly Student Assistant Job Announcement
CIRES hires a variety of hourly student positions ranging from entry-level undergraduate Student Assistants to Paraprofessional Student Assistants. There are many areas of research (https://cires.colorado.edu/research) at CIRES and the job opportunities for students may vary depending on the needs of each area and based on the current projects of research groups. Administrative student assistant positions may also be available on any of the CIRES Administration (https://cires.colorado.edu/people/administration) teams or even with some of the research groups.
The levels of each Student Assistant job code are based on the amount of responsibility, experience, independence, specialized knowledge, etc. More details on the titles and pay ranges of each level are below.
About CIRES
At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research In Environmental Sciences, more than 950 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. Job Descriptions for Student Assistant job codes
Student Assistant I - Entry Level/Semi-Skilled:
- Little or no prior experience or education required. Considerable training done on-the-job.
- Work is under immediate supervision (methods of performing tasks are well established and explained in specific terms).
- Work assignments typically involve standardized duties that are of a routine and repetitive nature.
- Work assignments may includethe use of special equipment, software applications or tools per an established procedure.
- The supervisor has responsibility for the assignment of work, the flow of work, production level, and provision of proper instructions.
- Jobs require limited to no independent judgment, analysis, or decision making skills. Some jobs may not move beyond this level.
Student Assistant II - Intermediate/Advanced:
- Some previous knowledge, experience or education required. Specialized training done on-the-job.
- Work is under general supervision (work objectives are set but methods of performing tasksare left up to the employee).
- Work assignments are varied and less routine and involve a moderate degree of responsibility.
- Work assignments may involveaccess to and use of sophisticated and/orconfidential data systemssuch as PS Campus Solutions, PS Finance, PS HCM, etc. for which considerable training is required.
- The supervisor has responsibility for the assignment of work, howeverthere is less control exercised over the flow of work and instructions given are more general.
- The employee is responsible for the results.
- Jobs require moderate independent judgment, analysis, and decision makingskills. Some jobs may not move beyond this level.
Student Assistant III - Specialist/Lead:
- Prior experience, education or specialized skills required.
- Work is under general supervision (work objectives are set but methods of performing tasksare left up to the employee).
- Work assignments involve a broad variety of skilled tasks.
- Jobs require the application of considerable independent judgment and decision making.
- Students at this level may have the responsibility to direct the work of lower-level student employees.
Student Assistant IV - Paraprofessional:
- Specialized knowledge or previous experience required, or the student has successfully demonstrated the ability to perform the judgment and skilled assignments representative of his/her field of study.
- Work is under limited supervision (perform without direct supervision except for infrequent occasions involving the most complex situations).
- Work assignments are highly technical and/or complex and the methodology may or may not be
- prescribed.
- Jobs involve a significant degree of responsibility and judgment.
- The work is typically within the student’s course of study at the senior or graduate level. Frequently will include the responsibility for coordinating the work of lower-level student employees.
Sick Leave
Per Regent Policy 11.E, all Student Assistant job codes are eligible to accrue 0.034 hour of sick leave for every hour worked which equates to 1.02 sick hours for every 30 hours worked. Accrual begins on the first day of the hire date. Employees will only be able to use 48 hours of sick leave within one fiscal year, regardless of how much leave they have banked. Additionally, only 48 hours of accrued sick leave may carryover from year to year. Review of leave balances and any adjustments will be conducted during the regular employee leave sweep process on July 1st. Sick leave balances are maintained for these employee groups for 6 months after the termination of their last position.
