CIRES/ NOAA NCEI Energetic Particle Space Scientist Research Associate
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder encourages applications for a Research Associate supporting NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). This position is for an Energetic Particle Space Scientist in NCEI’s Solar and Terrestrial Physics (STP) Group. A team of dedicated scientists within STP works to ensure that current and future space weather sensors on NOAA satellites provide effective operational products for use by the NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). STP’s overall responsibilities also include providing access to these environmental data by spacecraft engineers and the scientific community. The Energetic Particle Space Scientist will be primarily responsible for ensuring the quality and availability of data from the Space Environment In-Situ Suite (SEISS), operated onboard NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) R series system. SEISS measures the local charged particle environment across a broad energy range at multiple pitch angles. As a scientific and technical interface for STP to the GOES-R satellite program, the Energetic Particle Space Scientist works with the program to ensure that the characterization of the GOES-R particle measurements, and the products derived from these measurements, meet the needs of NOAA and the broader space science community. The GOES-R series is NOAA’s newest generation of GOES spacecraft, which includes a complement of space weather sensors that monitor the local space environment and the sun. The first GOES-R satellite, GOES-16, was launched in November 2016. The fourth and last GOES-R satellite is expected to launch in 2024. SEISS calibration and validation activities are ongoing.

- Developing, implementing, and executing calibration and validation activities for SEISS and its ground processing algorithms.
- Diagnosing SEISS instrument and ground processing anomalies, and developing and implementing solutions to these anomalies.
- Supporting SEISS pre-launch activities, early-orbit tests and evaluation, and long-term sensor performance sustainment.
- Supporting SEISS scientific and technical exchanges with the GOES-R program.
- Communicating oral and written SEISS status reports to the GOES-R program.
- Reviewing GOES-R program SEISS technical documentation.
- Developing SEISS Level 2 data processing algorithms to meet the needs of SWPC and assisting with the implementation and testing of Level 2 algorithms.
- Detailing descriptions of new algorithms and modifications to existing algorithms.
- Becoming a leading expert on NOAA’s space environment data and providing technical support to SWPC and the broader space science community
- Presenting results from GOES-R SEISS at national and international scientific meetings and in peer-reviewed publications.
What You Should Know
- This position requires U.S citizenship or permanent residence. If hired, you will need to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI, Federal Background check).
- This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. What We Can Offer

- Ph.D. in Physical Sciences, Engineering or similar technical discipline.
- Four years’ experience at the post-bachelors level in satellite sensor design, algorithm development, and/or scientific research with space environmental data.
What You Will Need
- Strong algorithm development skills and proficiency in one or more high-level programming languages such as Python, Matlab or IDL.
- Ability to conduct scientific research in space physics as an individual researcher or as a part of a larger research team.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, ability to critically review the products of others, and capacity for working in a team environment.
- Willingness to make short-term trips to NASA GSFC, NOAA-NSOF and instrument vendor facilities for technical meetings and/or pre-and post-launch activities.
- A proactive attitude combined with the ability to work with multiple organizations in order to meet NOAA’s requirements.
- Familiarity with NOAA’s satellite programs, particularly GOES.
- Willingness to pursue independent funding for research.
What We Would Like You To Have
- Ph.D. in Space Plasma Physics.
- One to two years’ postdoctoral experience working with Space Plasma instrument data.
