CIRES/ NOAA NCEI Post-Doc in Geomagnetism Research
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado is seeking a Post-doctoral research scientist to work in the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Geomagnetism group. The goal of this research project is to better separate rapid magnetic field variations originating in the Earth’s outer core from effects of external magnetic sources.
The successful applicant will collaborate with scientists from NCEI Geomagnetism on developing a new data-based model of the magnetospheric magnetic field near the Earth’s surface, from a combination of low Earth orbit satellite (including the European Space Agency Swarm tri-satellite mission) and ground observatory data. The obtained model will then be used to extract rapid core field variations from both satellite and observatory records, and investigate their spatio-temporal characteristics over several decades. Improved observations and models of rapid core field variations are expected to better constrain physics-based models of the geodynamo and further our understanding of deep Earth dynamics.

What You Should Know
This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. - Availability to travel at the level of 1-2 trips/year.
- Experience with geophysical inverse problems.
- Strong computational skills (e.g. Python, C/C++, Fortran, Matlab).
