CIRES/CSD Physical Research Scientist
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to work on laser-based instrumentation for measurement of atmospheric constituents. This position is located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Earth System Research Laboratory Chemical Science Division (NOAA/ESRL/CSD) in Boulder, Colorado. The selected candidate will work primarily on developing fiber laser systems for spectroscopic detection of atmospheric trace gases. She or he will be expected to work independently and in collaboration with researchers in CSD and collaborators at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to improve upon existing ultraviolet single-frequency fiber-based laser systems for deployment on mobile platforms including aircraft. The goal of this work is the routine measurement of concentrations and isotopic composition of sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide throughout the troposphere and lower stratosphere.
- Participation in the design, construction, and testing of fiber laser systems and atmospheric analytical instrumentation.
- Participation in field missions to make atmospheric measurements. Field missions often require up to several weeks at deployment sites.
- Preparation of data and itsinterpretation for presentation at scientific meetings and for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

- PhD in physics, chemistry, or related field.
- Knowledge of laser physics and experience in the design and construction of fiber lasers and amplifiers.
- Knowledge and experience with nonlinear optics and nonlinear optical frequency conversion.
- Experience in the design of geometric optical systems and stray-light reduction.
- Interest in building and using custom instrumentation to make measurements in the atmosphere. A background in atmospheric science is desirable but not required.
- Knowledge of UV/visible molecular absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy.
- A record of presentation of scientific results at conferences and publication in scientific journals.
